I used this to install an aftermarket stereo in my 2002 E39 BMW 5-series wagon. It only preserved the buttons for volume up/down and next/last track. I have a button that shows a person talking (would have started the factory carphone) and an R/T button (intended to change input sources, I think), but neither of those buttons did anything.I retained the wiring harness part of this, but replaced the steering wheel controls unit with a spare Axxess ASWC-1 I had, and those buttons are now useful again (mute and voice prompt) and programmable.
